2-in-1 Chili!

This chilli was spotted in the garden by chance. It has one side that is red and the other side green. How amazing!

I wonder what triggers it to ripen. I am sure it is enzyme mediated but it still doesn’t explain why the ripening is one-sided as the enzymes would be found throughout the chili. Well, unless it also depends upon activation by sunlight – maybe it only received sunlight on one side and not the other. But, this is quite unlikely because the other chilies on the same plant are ripening evenly.

Perhaps it is a genetic mutation: enzymes are only produced on one side and not the other?

Well, in this age of modern convenience, even chilies come in two colors.

What’s next??!!

Hi Mr Paul Sin!

The colour of the chili really caught my eye. It look so interesting, I wonder how it taste like. I agree with you, maybe it got something to do with the “genetic mutation: enzymes are only produced on one side and not the other”.

However, the first time I set my eyes on the picture, it reminds me of Genetically Modified (GM) foods where genes from an “unrelated plant” or another species into another plant. There had been alots of debate on these food.

I felt that the appearance of these food is mainly to meet the quality desired by the consumers- us. We complain why there are seeds in grape, banana, watermelons, etc. Now, we can eat seedless grapes and watermelons. My father once told me that the seeds in banana are big and people had trouble eating them, but thanks to GM food, we can easily eat bananas. Food had become more convenient.

So, what's next, maybe one can find 3-1 pepper growing in their garden. Red, Green and yellow!wow!

Waaaaa this chili is really intersting!! I reallly never seen anything like this before. I wish i have the chance to taste it, it should taste quite special as because it is 2 in 1 chili thus should have two kind of different taste.

If it is sold in thr market i think quite alot of people would buy because it is 2 in 1 therfore they no need to buy one green n one red chili, they jus need to buy this 2 in 1 chili..how convenient!

And when i saw this picture i was thinking that maybe this chili haven really ripe fully, however after reading your sentance:'But, this is quite unlikely because the other chilies on the same plant are ripening evenly.' Thus i now also think tat maybe this chili is genetically modified in some ways.

By the way have you got the chance to taste this intersting chili??

Hello Mr Sin,

i've read all the postings and find that this is one of the more interesting post that attracted my attention. A 2-in-1 chilli reminds me of an egg with 2 egg yolks that i've seen. Well, i don't quite agree that this chilli is a genetic modified food (commented by my classmates) if it does, the qualities (shape, size, colour, taste, texture and even nutritive value) should be different. For example, a normal banana should be of yellow colour when ripe. But when implanted a gene (come from different species of the banana), the resultant crop may turn to a different shape of banana? of different colours (purple? or even my favourite colour- pink?) That then is called a genetically modified food! Also, GM food is harmful to human health in the long run (Having to say if it is a GM food then eating the chilli will harm our body?)

Many foods are gentically modified nowadays as it has higher yields with fortified nutritive value. But i would rather want the original one (i always go for the simple and original taste as it's natural). However, the more weird things can become, the more it attracts people to know more about it. This is the weird part about human nature.

Hi Mr Paul Sin

When i first came to your blog,i scrolled down to look at all the posts. I actually did not notice this picture as i thought that it was just an ordinary chilli and scrolled back up. When i saw it the second time, i was shocked as i did not realize that it was actually a 2 in 1 chilli.

Never in my whole life have i ever seen a chilli which has two colours. When i showed my mother the picture, she said that it could be fake, but when i reminded her about the purple and green brinjal that we saw at my grandmother's house, she agreed too. (if i can find the photo that i took i will show it to you)

I also think that it could be due to the enzymes inside the chilli, but we do not know what exactly happens inside it. I would definitely want to know what causes the difference in colour in the chilli.

If like what the others said about GM food, who knows we could have red and green apple too!! Sweet on one side and sour on the other side.

Thanks for sharing with us all these information...
