If love like Bread

If love like bread
We knead and feel with hearts that burn
With longing
To savour, each cherished bite
And fragrance that lingers
Forever in the depths of eternity
Bring pleasure to each sense
As we knead and mould each piece
Into ropes that bind

If love like bread
We wait with patience
For it to grow

For it will grow
Unless we forget
to care and cherish

then it will die
and pain will grow

But we start once again
hoping,
never giving up
with faith in our hearts
that one day, perhaps
we will find love
that will grow
and the courage, to start,
all over, all over again…..

Judy Koh

I was very touched the first time I read this poem. It spoke volumes by distilling the essence of what I was feeling about love and relationships. It very aptly likened love to the process of breadmaking.

To make bread, we need to knead the dough first. And, we should knead it carefully as an under-knead or over-knead dough would not give the desired volume and texture. Other steps in the breadmaking process also need to be carefully managed to achieve the desired results. Proper fermentation, molding, proofing and finally baking will result in a bread of beautiful color, shape, texture, and with an aroma that lingers on long after it has been eaten. Love, like bread, when properly nurtured, is beautiful and is relished forever.

But good bread is not without a price. The process of kneading the dough is tiring, fermentation and proofing demand patience and good judgment, and baking is hot and we risk getting burned if careless. But what price would we not pay to have good bread? Alas, despite our best intentions and effort, we may still fail.

As we “knead and mold” each others’ lives, we need to manage the relationship carefully for love to survive, if not blossom. Friction, misunderstanding, undue expectations, etc. could throw a relationship into shambles. Ignoring it will finally lead to irreparable damage with no options for reconciliation.

And, love, like bread, will diminish and die. In its place, “pain will grow” and there will be no end to this pain. The pain of rejection and regret will follow us for the rest of our lives. Despair, cynicism, insecurity, depression, amongst others, will haunt us. When will it ever stop growing? Even if it can be stopped, can it be forgotten?

The deeper that we have loved, the greater is the pain. And, to pick ourselves up to love again really takes a lot of courage. Questions of inadequacy in dealing with similar situations, loss of confidence, suspicion, etc are barriers that prevent us from starting another relationship. It takes a lot of resolution, inner strength, and above all else, personal courage, to allow ourselves to start all over again.

This is the part of the poem that touched me most and I think this is the best part of the poem: only someone who has gone through life’s upheavals could relate such an experience, and Judy has put it down so poetically in just a couple of hesitant lines.

and the courage, to start,
all over, all over again

Hi Mr Sin,

I read through your blog entries but the one that hit me most was this entry. Like you, I felt the poem, in its few mere sentences, spoke volumes about Love and is spot on about every bit of it. The nurturing, the 'rules' to love, and the pain that comes with love. I'm sure there will be many who can easily relate with this poem.

But what was special about this was the way the poet chose to compare love to the process of baking a bread. What better choice to pick! Both requires hard work to cultivate and both, being liable to failure, has it's own pain as well. Great poem there!

Hi Mr Sin!

What really caught my attention among all the other postings is this post on "If love like Bread". It is truly an amazing and eye-catching poem.

"If love like bread
We wait with patience
For it to grow"

The above phrases taken from the poem truly spoke to my heart a lot. Like bread, we should have the patience to bake it. Without patience, the outcome of the bread may not turn out to be what we had expected. Just like in a relationship, if without patience, love will never grow. Hard work and patience are needed to knead and bake a good bread,
and relationship requires both hard work and patience too. Therefore, love, like bread,(as what you had said)when properly nurtured, is beautiful and is relished forever.

Love never fails. Like bread, it will turn out yummy if we bake it the right way. However, despite all the best intentions and effort that we may put in, we can still fail. This is probably due to the patience that we are lacking. If we do not wait in patience, love, like bread, will never grow.

Nonetheless, i totally agree with you in the way in which the poet had written out this poem. It can really be reflected into our daily lives and helps us to be cleared of what love is really about.

"Having the FAITH in our hearts that one day, perhaps we will find love that will grow. "

Just like love, i can have the FAITH that one day i can bake a good bread, and slowly awaits that ONE DAY to arrive. :D

Hi Mr Sin,

After reading all your postings, i felt that this posting has given me the most impression. It has also inspired me to be a better chef and baker.

Since when baking a bread and u love it we have to use our heart and soul to made it.After thinking much i fely yhat since this is my course and i love it i will have to study it with my heart and soul.

As in the posting mentioned about obstacles faced during kneading the dough. This also refers to my real life. This course is just like i am kneading the dough and faced some obstacles(organic biology chemistry and maths)

After much though i felt that to made a perfect bread i would have to overcome my obstacles. From here it has inspired me not to give up on those two subjects.

So i must put in my pasiion in doing this course. As in the postings it said that there would be failure when baking a bread .

This has make me learn that whenever i make a mistake i should try to correct my mistake

Thus in conclusion i really love this posting and i will have the mindset of ' when thers a will theres a way'

Hello Mr Sin,

I read through your blog entries but 'If love like Bread' entry captures my heart.I find this entry very touching as it relates bread with love which is everlasting.

The poem really touched my heart because the poet seemed to be able to compare bread and love. She tried many phrases to be able to relate that making bread is not an easy way to knead. It needs energy, faith and confidence in kneading the dough. Thus, she compared it with love as love needs confidence to boost up relationship.

If there's failure in relationship, thus failing to knead the dough will be affected because one's mood shows everything.

Thus, with much passion and 'Never Gives up' morality,I Believed that with more energy and hardwork in kneading the dough just to produce good bread at the end proves to me that there's no limit to hardwork.Same goes to love.
"When there's a will,there's a way".

A very good evening to you Mr Sin,

Of all the entries that I have spent my time reading in your blog, this poem catches my eye the most. Personally, I am fan of poetry, especially regarding love and in this poem; it uses making bread as a symbol of nurturing love to your loved ones. In this poem, using the processes of making bread, it actually showed how we should go about loving someone. This is a very good poem. I enjoyed reading it.

Hi Mr Sin,

the main reason why everyone commented on this is basically to find that its amazing how food is relate to ones emotion which is LOVE.

A wonderful thing everyone wants to know how it feels like. Love is something that cant be explained in words or by using formulas. It’s a matter of ones heart. By relating it to the process of making bread, it gives a clearer picture.

Furthermore the characteristics of the process give a better understanding of love language. Being passionate, patience and putting our maximum effort to hope that the bread will turn out excellent. These apply in building love too.

It’s wonderful when you come to realizing it that what we love the most; food even have the same language as love.

Hello Mr. Paul Sin

Without a doubt, this particular post really touches many hearts including mine too! I love literature and it never occurs to me that one actually relates bread making to love.

The long process of making bread takes one to be passionate and patient for the outcome to turn perfectly fine. Every knead we make, we must do it properly and straight from the heart. And this same goes to build love too. For a relationship to work well, one needs to put an effort to it.

And when we failed to achieve the exact taste that we want for the bread, it takes courage and “never gives up attitude” to get back on track to produce a perfect one. When love dies, like bread making gone wrong, it takes it all to start all over again. As one said, “when there’s a will, there’s a way”

I guess, adding some love to every food we make is the secret ingredient after all!

Best Regards

Hi Mr Sin,

This posting captures my attention and has the most impact on me. I am touched by the beautiful phrases in the poem, which relate bread with love. I totally agree that baking bread requires love.

Making bread is very much like a relationship. Both require great efforts, love and patience.

A relationship involves 2 people to spark while bread dough requires 2 hands to knead and mould.

A broken relationship is like an over baked bread. However we should not shut love out of our life because of broken relationships. Similarly we should continue to bake and cook despite failures!

To me,this posting on 'If love like Bread' is the most meaningful and touching poem I have ever read.
It never occured to me that love can be compared to bread. This poem just show how important PATIENCE is both in love and bread making.

'To savour, each cherished bite
And fragrance that lingers'

I like these phrases. These phrases tells me that we need to appreciate every moments together so that the love will keep on burning.Just like bread, we need to consider every bit of the ingredients and techniques used in order to get the best bread.Of course. The best bread wil have a very nice fragrance.

To me,as long as you are sincere in everything you do,nothing could go wrong.

However, giving up because we failed to achieve the best result will not get you anywhere.

Love needs patience to blossom. The same goes for bread making. Both is a slow process to get the best outcome.

Therefore, we should keep on trying to improve ourselves by taking note all the mistakes that we have done that have caused the failure.

After I read the poem, I was shocked by the linkage between breads and life. And I agree with what Judy Koh has said. We need patience to make good bread as well as to construct a nice life. We can’t not be very mature just over one night. It takes time for us to grow. Bread-making is not very complicated process, but requires more carefulness and patience. Maybe we will face a lot of failures before success. But with the hopes, longings, passions and patience, we will succeed one day. This is what the bread-making has taught me. Making delicious foods is another form of life and another experience of life. It brings us to expose to the different tastes of life---sour, sweet, bitter, spicy. It also helps us build up good characteristics. Thus we can see foods have played a significant role in our life and a good teacher.

Hi Mr Sin,

Hmmm... i glance through all of your postings and found that this particular post is exceptionally eye-cathing to me.

To include poem to relate with the bread-making process is definitely something very magnificent indeed.

Many a times, ignorant people will just find the bread- making process as painstaking and not worth wasting the time to do it. Some of which would rather buy it than to do make it on their own.

The ability to make a good bread brings personal satisfaction and pleasure. Moreover, it drives someone to do even better in the next trials.

Relating 'love' with bread....
Some of us will agree to the poem, while others, disagree. As for me, it's all about the passion. Never mind if we could not produce a good product. The breadmaking process itself is a learning experiencce for the individual. And most importantly, the overall feel of making it:)

This poem is definitely a good start for amateurs like me in this line:)

Hi Sir,

Jeremy here...i like tis post as i agree tat love is almost the same as the process of making bread...the only difference is tat love involves two person while bread making involves one person and the dough...

love is almost the same as bread making as there is bound to be happiness and sadness during it
sadness because u had disputes wif ur partner while happiness because u had a wonderful time wif ur partner... sadness because ur bread didnt turn out to be wad u longed and taste for while happiness because ur bread turns out well and taste out wad u wan...

love is almost the same as bread making because theres bound to be failure and success depends on e effort and commitment you put in.. e more commited you are, e more successful u will get..it e same for both as e more effort u put in ur bread gets better so does ur relationship...

however... the difference is if u fail in love theres no way u can repair it... howevere if u fail in making bread, u can still make it over and over again till u are successful

Whats up Mr Sin,

I totally moved by the poem,i really agree that love is just like making bread. It takes patience and hard work to make it happen.

"But good bread is not without a price" This is really a good example for the sacrifice need to make love happen.

Judy Koh has given me the idea to creating emotions using food. Such as love, happiness and even anger.
